Every day is about taking risks. Life is about passion. That’s what makes lifelong thrill-seeking winemaker Richard Shelton a perfect match for Smashberry Wines.
A world traveler, proudly born and raised in Texas, y’all, “Tex” discovered his winemaking destiny while tasting wine in Patagonia (yes, Patagonia). He followed his calling with his characteristic drive for excellence, earning his Masters of Enology at the highly acclaimed Roseworthy Program at Adelaide University in South Australia, and working at the AWRI Research Winery at Waite Campus.
Always seeking new challenges, he made traditional Ice wine in Pennsylvania, went home to Texas to work with many of the fringe varietals there, then off to California as winemaker for Monterey Wine Company, a custom crush facility giving Richard the privilege to work with an incredible variety of winemakers and range of Central Coast varietals. Most recently, Richard came to us from Kosta Browne in Sonoma, mastering high end Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast, Russian River and Santa Lucia Highlands.
